APFNet Workshop on Community Forestry Development in the Context of Climate Chan

A workshop on Community Forestry Development in the Context of Climate Change was launched on 6 June 2011, in Kunming, China. Sponsored and organized by APFNet in collaboration with National Plateau Wetlands Research Center and Southwest Forestry University, it is the third workshop under the “Forestry and Rural Development” thematic training series of APFNet capacity building program since 2009.?

The workshop brought together 16 senior forestry officials from 15 economies in the region, including Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Peru, Philippines, Thailand, Viet Nam, and so forth. Over the past decades, community forestry has emerged as one of the most promising options in combining forest conservation with rural development and poverty reduction. Some economies in the region have accumulated abundant experiences and expertise on the ground that are valuable and can be shared and summarized in a systematic way. Therefore, this workshop is designed to enable participants to share the best practices on the ground to summarize the successful models and solutions and also to identify the key challenges and opportunities facing the Asia-Pacific economies in community forestry development in the context of climate change.

The workshop has drawn dozens of professional expertise from government agencies, regional organizations and universities, such as RECOFTC, United Nations University and Royal Forest Estate Netherlands etc. Furthermore, a mix of methods was adopted in the workshop, including thematic reports, case studies, in-class discussions and field trips. County reports by participants will also provide a basis for in-depth exchange on successful practices and lessons learned on community forestry development.

?A field trip to Qiubei County in Yunnan Province will be organized in the latter part of the workshop to showcase the experiences of community forestry development at local level in China.
